One of the biggest stars in the NBA was acknowledged on Christmas Day for his contributions to a community in North Georgia rather than for his basketball skills. Henry County Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett publicly praised Dr. Shaquille O'Neal for his years of community service during ESPN's special Christmas edition of "NBA Tip-Off," announcing his new position as Chief of Community Relations for the Henry County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett announced the promotion, stating that it expands a nationally recognized community-partnership model focused on visibility, service, and trust. O'Neal previously held the position of Director of Community Relations for the prior five years.

Legendary basketball star Shaquille O'Neal has been promoted to Chief of Community Relations by the Henry County Sheriff's Office, with effect from Christmas Day. In front of presenter Ernie Johnson, analysts Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, and Scandrett, O'Neal was recognised live on television.
"Since then, we have done tremendous things in the community," Scandrett said.
"We've touched about 370 events, reached about 42,000 people, and fed over 14,000 children. He's been at the helm of that."
According to the Sheriff's Office, O'Neal coordinated the distribution of tens of thousands of meals and gifts to local families during that time and assisted in organizing hundreds of community events around Henry County. During the broadcast, Sergeant Powell and Captain Deon L. Wallace also presented a plaque that officially acknowledged O'Neal's leadership and service.
The plaque reads:
"For your outstanding commitment to service, community engagement in Henry County, and for your leadership, compassion and unwavering support of our mission to protect and serve.”
Tens of thousands of recorded community encounters aimed at improving ties between citizens and law enforcement are also attributed by the department to his leadership. The promotion, according to officials, demonstrates the agency's conviction that public safety starts with public trust and that regular interaction between deputies and the community is essential to successful cooperation and crime prevention.
Wallace also emphasized O'Neal's dedication to service and their long-standing relationship.
"I couldn't be more proud of Shaquille," he said. "It is an absolute honor to call him my best friend. Our bond goes all the way back to our days as military brats in Wildflecken, Germany, and watching his continued growth, leadership and commitment to service has been nothing short of inspiring."
Shaquille O’Neal’s deep roots in Henry County and long-standing commitment to community service
O'Neal has a strong connection to the Atlanta region thanks to his many business ventures, which include franchises for Papa Johns and Krispy Kreme. In the McDonough region, he also owns a number of residences. As part of a larger plan to increase community trust in law enforcement, Scandrett appointed O'Neal Director of Community Relations in 2021, marking the start of the relationship.
Since then, O'Neal has been actively involved in Henry County, helping to organise food giveaways, turkey drives, the sheriff's office's yearly Christmas Shop With a Deputy event for kids, and Ride 4 Unity, a motorbike event aimed at uniting locals and law enforcement.
O'Neal and the Henry County sheriff intervened to assist a family in North Carolina in September after a house fire claimed the lives of four children. According to officials, O'Neal has also acted as a constructive link between the sheriff's office and the community, fostering chances for dialogue, comprehension, and connection.
O'Neal gives Christmas gifts to kids in Henry County every year. He provided toys and necessities to hundreds of pupils at Fairview Elementary School only last week.
O'Neal has a long history of serving in police enforcement outside of Henry County. He formerly worked as a sheriff's deputy in Clayton County, Georgia, and has formally served as a reserve police officer in several American cities, including Miami, Los Angeles, and Doral. O'Neal, who has received training and certification, has paid for his own expenditures while volunteering his time.
