Shreyas Iyer resumes batting, heads to CoE for further net sessions

MUMBAI: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer had his first batting session on Wednesday and is now headed to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where he will “undergo further sessions in the nets,” TOI has learnt. Iyer last featured in the ODI series against Australia in Oct, where he suffered a severe spleen injury to his abdomen during the third and final match in Sydney, which resulted in his hospitalisation. The injury forced the 31-year-old batter to miss the home ODI series against South Africa, followed by the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy tournaments for Mumbai.

“He has resumed batting in the nets as per the CoE guidelines. He will undergo further sessions,” a source said There is now a touch-and-go chance that Iyer may return to action for Mumbai in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, and subsequently in the three-match home ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11 in Vadodara.Meanwhile, it is learnt that India’s Test and ODI opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will join the Mumbai team in Jaipur for the Vijay Hazare Trophy on December 29.
