NEW DELHI: Kaushik Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Lakhipur constituency with 1,25,302 votes, defeating Congress candidate M. Santi Kumar Singha by a margin of 99,401 votes. Singha secured 25,901 votes. NOTA recorded 2,561 votes.Lakhipur assembly constituency is one of the 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly. The constituency, part of the Barak Valley, also serves as the headquarters of the Lakhipur subdivision and falls under the Silchar Lok Sabha seat. It is a general (unreserved) constituency.In the 2026 assembly elections, the BJP fielded Kaushik Rai, while the Congress nominated M.

Santi Kumar Singha.Formed in 1951, Lakhipur has seen 15 Assembly elections and one bypoll. The Congress has historically dominated the seat, winning it 12 times over the years. Veteran leader Dinesh Prasad Goala emerged as a key figure, securing seven victories in 1983, 1985, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011.Following his death in 2014, his son Rajdeep Goala carried forward the political legacy. He won the by-election the same year, defeating BJP candidate Sanjay Kumar Thakur by 9,837 votes. Rajdeep Goala went on to win again in the 2016 assembly elections.The BJP registered its first victory in Lakhipur in 2021, marking a shift in the constituency's electoral trend.
