NEW DELHI: Chakradhar Gogoi of the BJP emerged victorious in the election, securing a total of 67038 votes. He defeated AJP candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi by a decisive margin of 50914 votes.
The contest in Assam’s Khowang constituency features BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi won against AJP leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi, as part of the state’s larger electoral process.
Exit polls released by various agencies indicate that the BJP-led government is expected to win a comfortable majority, a result that would see
Himanta Biswa Sarma retain his position as chief minister.
Polling for all 126 constituencies was conducted on April 9, with turnout exceeding 85 percent, reflecting a high level of voter participation.
Notably, this strong turnout was observed across both rural and urban regions, highlighting the widespread and energetic involvement of voters across the state.
Khowang is an assembly constituency in Assam's Tinsukia district, known for its Moran community and tea-dominated economy. Chakradhar Gogoi from BJP serves as the current MLA, elected in the 2021 Assam assembly elections. He won with 55,604 votes (50.5per cent vote share), defeating INC's Pranjal Ghatowar (33,263 votes, 30.2per cent) by a margin of 22,341 votes (20.3per cent).
The constituency faces ongoing demands for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Moran and Sutiya communities, despite repeated political promises over the past decade. Economic blockades and rallies highlight frustrations over exclusion from ST benefits, limited autonomous council powers under state laws (versus Sixth Schedule protections), and needs for cultural preservation and development.
These tensions disrupt local commerce, tea estates, and oil transport in this commercial hub.
