NEW DELHI: Prasanta Phukan of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Dibrugarh assembly seat in Assam with a massive margin of 72,043 votes, defeating Mainak Patra of the Assam Jatiya Parishad. Phukan secured 1,06,803 votes, while Patra polled 34,760.
Kamal Hazarika of the Vikas India Party finished third with 11,699 votes.
The result reinforces Phukan’s dominance in Dibrugarh, an urban constituency in Upper Assam where he has remained a key political figure for nearly two decades. He has held the seat since 2006, barring a brief setback in 2001, and had also won convincingly in 2021 with over 60 per cent vote share.
Dibrugarh, part of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, is a major commercial hub known for its tea industry, oil sector and trading networks. The constituency has a relatively high literacy rate and a large urban voter base, making electoral contests here closely watched.
Key local issues include traffic congestion, recurring flooding linked to the Brahmaputra, and pressure on urban infrastructure. Economic concerns such as employment generation in the tea sector and rising youth unemployment continue to shape voter priorities.
The area has also witnessed protests in the past over the Citizenship Amendment Act, reflecting its diverse demographic composition.
The 2026 Assam assembly elections recorded a turnout of over 85%, among the highest in the state’s history, with strong participation seen across both urban and rural areas. The scale of Phukan’s victory underlines a decisive mandate in one of Assam’s most prominent constituencies.
