NEW DELHI: In his first cabinet meeting after taking oath as Kerala chief minister, V D Satheesan announced a Rs 3,000 hike in the monthly honorarium of ASHA workers, fulfilling a key promise to the frontline health workers who played a crucial role in the state's healthcare system. The government also approved honorarium hikes for Anganwadi workers, cooking workers, pre-primary teachers and ayas, the Chief Minister's Office said.
The United Democratic Front government also announced free KSRTC bus travel for women starting June 15, a move aimed at encouraging more women to use public transport and ease their daily commute. The cabinet also approved the creation of a special department for the elderly, focusing on their healthcare, social security, and overall well-being.Satheesan took oath at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, marking the return of the Congress-led UDF to power after a decade. The decisions were among the first taken by the new government, signalling its focus on welfare and social security.
