Nagpur: Traffic Department of Nagpur police recovered over 40 lakh in fines while settling hundreds of pending traffic violation cases during the Maha Lok Adalat held on Saturday. A total of 420 convictions under Motor Vehicles (MV) Act and 105 convictions under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)-related traffic cases were resolved during the special drive conducted across the city's traffic zones. According to data, the department recovered 37.98 lakh through drunken driving and other traffic offence cases during the Lok Adalat. In addition, 2.04 lakh was recovered from 193 cases that were sent to court, while another 59,650 was collected from 54 "unpaid to paid" cases. The department also recovered 15,700 in 15 cases registered under BNS Sec 281 (Rash Driving) and 39,300 in 90 cases under BNS Sec 285 (Causing Danger). Among the city's traffic zones, Cotton Market recorded the highest fine recovery of 4.74 lakh from 36 drunken driving cases, followed closely by Pardi with 4.35 lakh and Sadar with 3.92 lakh. Sonegaon recovered 3.83 lakh, while Sitabuldi collected 3.36 lakh during the drive.
The data showed that 227 drunken driving (DD) cases alone contributed significantly to the recovery amount. Several motorists also opted to settle long-pending traffic challans and court matters through the Lok Adalat mechanism, helping reduce pendency of cases. Traffic police officials said the Maha Lok Adalat provided citizens an opportunity to resolve pending traffic violations by paying reduced penalties and avoiding prolonged legal proceedings.
