Chamarajanagar begins work on electric crematorium
Mysuru: Chamarajanagar city council has decided to establish an electric crematorium at a cost of Rs 4 crore. Two acres of land has been identified near Yedabetta to set up the crematorium, which is aimed at cutting down the use of firewood, which leads to pollution.
The population of the town increases every year due to increased industrial activities. There is a growing demand to establish an electric crematorium in the town. Though the city municipal council announced the construction of an electric crematorium in recent years, it was not materialised due to budget constraints, among other reasons.
Finally, the municipal administration has floated the tender and the CMC has made all preparations to set up the facility on two acres of land near Yedabetta, near the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences.
Speaking to TOI, the CMC commissioner Parashuram said that the tender awarding process was completed. “CMC will take up the construction of the facility at the cost of Rs 4 crore, soon. The new high-tech facility curbs pollution caused by burning of firewood. About 8 to 10 bodies can be cremated each day at the facility,” he stated.
The CMC has also initiated measures to develop connecting roads, parking area, a park, seating area, drinking water facility, among other facilities on the two acres of land near Yedabetta.
Small and marginal sections of communities found it difficult to cremate their family members due to a lack of burial grounds and graveyards for them. The new facility will also help them, said Mahadevashetty of Chamarajanagar.
