Mumbai: While the BMC on Friday evening claimed that it successfully completed repairs to a 1,650-mm main water pipeline on Dr E Moses Road in Mahalaxmi, which was damaged on Wednesday evening, there was no relief for residents in areas such as Mumbai Central, Nagpada and Kamathipura even on Saturday morning. Residents complained that they were put through hardship after being without water for over 48 hours, as some areas did not receive water. The BMC provided water tankers, but that was not sufficient.
MLA Amin Patel said that there has been an acute water shortage in South Mumbai. People were out of their homes and on the street since early morning. Some areas received no water and there was severe shortage in other areas. Patel said that areas such as Mumbai Central, Nagpada and Kamathipura were affected. Repairs were conducted on the pipeline, which developed a major crack on Wednesday evening, which led to water cuts across some of the wards.
Former corporator Javed Juneja said that during the 48-hour repair period, the BMC did not make available any tanker and people somehow managed. On Saturday morning, half the areas in many of the wards did not receive water.
BMC officials said a pressure drop was observed in the Mumbai Central zone, due to which many complaints were received from Falkland Road, Patthe Bapurao Marg, RS Nimkar Marg and several BIT buildings. "The pipelines were empty and pressure did not develop, which caused some problem. However, special supply was given in Mumbai Central area from 11:45 am to 1 pm. Supply will be normal in all areas on Sunday," said a BMC official.
