Govt women’s college in Puttur to roll out BSc course
Mangaluru: The Govt First Grade College for Women in Puttur will introduce a BSc course from the coming academic year, expanding beyond arts and commerce, following sustained demand from students and parents. The college currently has over 514 students enrolled in BA and BCom programmes. After operating without a permanent building for nearly a decade, the college shifted a few days ago to its new premises at Bolwar, which is awaiting official inauguration.Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai told TOI that apart from securing approval, he has sought a Rs 1 crore grant for laboratories and furniture. "There are no nearby govt first grade colleges that offer science UG courses. As a result, interested candidates were forced to take up commerce or humanities. This will help a lot of students," he said.Principal Nanda Kishore S said the college has received state govt permission and will apply for affiliation from Mangalore University. "With regard to staff, govt may sanction permanent posts or guest faculty based on the admissions received. It will be known during the regular transfers of the teaching faculty," he said. The new building has 12 classrooms, with more planned. Students come from Puttur, Sullia, Uppinangady, Vittal, Eshwaramangala and parts of Kerala.
