The Heat Is On: 30°C at night, 43°in day
Indore: Hours after sunset, the air over Indore continued to carry the sharp sting of daytime heat. Even close to midnight, temperatures hovered around 30 degrees Celsius, turning sleep uncomfortable and marking the city’s second consecutive ‘warm night’ on Thursday.
The prolonged heat spell showed no signs of easing as daytime temperatures also stood at 43 degrees Celsius for the third straight day.
The unusually high night temperature has sharply increased discomfort levels across the city. Residents faced warm and humid conditions through the night, with many reporting little relief indoors despite the use of coolers and fans. The minimum temperature remained nearly six degrees above normal, while the maximum temperature settled at 43 degrees Celsius, around three degrees above average.
According to weather officials, Indore once again emerged as the warmest city in Madhya Pradesh during nighttime conditions. The city also continued under an orange alert for both heatwave and warm night conditions, which is expected to remain in force for the next three days.
Though light clouds moved across the city during parts of the day, they failed to reduce the intensity of the heat. Hot winds continued through the afternoon, keeping roads and marketplaces comparatively less crowded. Many residents avoided stepping out during peak daytime hours due to the scorching conditions.
Meteorologists said multiple weather systems are influencing central India at present. Cyclonic circulations remain active over west and east Uttar Pradesh, southwest Rajasthan adjoining Pakistan, and southeast Madhya Pradesh. An east-west trough extending from southeast Madhya Pradesh towards Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim is also affecting atmospheric conditions.
Officials said that persistent western and north-westerly winds are preventing temperatures from dropping significantly during nighttime. A weak western disturbance is likely to impact northwest India from May 15, though its influence over Indore is expected to remain minimal.
The continuing warm nights are particularly striking for Indore, which is widely associated with comparatively cooler nights because of its plateau location. Weather experts believe the city may have to wait until after May 21 for even a slight dip in temperatures and some respite from the prolonged heat spell.
