Man held six days after murdering his newly wed wife in Nabi Karim
New Delhi: Five days after the decomposed dead body of a newlywed woman was discovered at a rented room in central Delhi’s Nabi Karim, police arrested her 38-year-old husband in connection with the alleged dowry death and murder.
The incident come to light after a PCR call was received on May 8 from the landlord of a house in the Laxmanpuri about a foul smell emanating from a tenant’s room.
The cops rushed to the spot to find a decomposing dead body of a woman on a bed. She was later identified as a 28-year-old resident of Haldwani, Uttarakhand. The Inquiry revealed that she had gotten married to one Mohammad Ejaz, a 38-year-old from Bihar’s Vaishali district, on April 26 and the couple had recently moved into the rented accommodation. A case was registered at the Nabi Karim police station.
The father of the deceased woman had earlier alleged dowry harassment by her husband and his brother, 29-year-old Sarfaraz. The accused, Sarfaraz, had subsequently been arrested on May 10, while Ejaz was found to be absconding.
“During technical surveillance, his location was traced to Kolkata, West Bengal,” said DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh. “A police team was deputed to Kolkata for the apprehension of the accused. He was traced and nabbed on Wednesday in the Karaya area of Kolkata.”
Ejaz allegedly confessed to strangling his wife to death in the early hours of May 7 during a quarrel over a dispute related to dowry and money matters. Police added that after the murder, he had locked the room door from outside and fled to Kolkata to evade arrest.
He had also allegedly stolen the mobile phone of the deceased woman and later sold it for Rs 2,500 to arrange funds. The phone has been recovered by police.
