In Rourkela, Dipak Sharma, an employee, fell victim to cyber fraud. He lost Rs 4.87 lakh after being promised a job and high investment returns. Sharma contacted a company found on social media. He deposited money over four days. Suspicion arose when further deposits were requested. Jhirpani police are investigating the case. They are seeking bank statements to proceed.

Rourkela: Jhirpani police here have launched an investigation after a 33-year-old private firm employee lost Rs 4.87 lakh to a cyber fraudster who promised a lucrative job and double returns on investment.Police said Dipak Sharma, who resides at Koel Nagar, was searching for a job on social media on Sept 2, when he came across a company offering a lucrative job and stating that investors would receive double returns on their investment within three days. Sharma and contacted the number provided. After being reassured, Sharma, who had Rs 5 lakh in his bank account after taking a personal loan, began sending the amount in phases to the company’s account over the next four days, sending a total of Rs 4.87 lakh. When Sharma was told to deposit more money, he became suspicious and, upon dialling the number mentioned, did not receive any response. He realised he had been duped and lodged a complaint at Jhirpani police station on Sunday.“Based on the FIR, we have registered case and we are investigating,” said Pradeep Kumar Naik, inspector in-charge, Jhirpani police station. “We have written to the bank where the complainant has his account, to provide us the detailed statement, for taking further action,” said Naik.
