BMC opens 3 reduce, recycle, reuse kiosks

Bhubaneswar: To promote sanitation with sustainability by making the best use of various types of waste, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday opened three reduce, recycle, reuse (RRR) kiosks. At the RRR kiosks, apart from different artefacts and decorative items made from waste, used clothes donated by people are also available.BMC officials said altogether six RRR centres are open in the city at the moment, including the three that came up on Monday.“We have provided a dedicated vehicle for each zone for transporting goods to these centres. Reusable items such as toys, clothes and pants, shirts, books, slippers, furniture, TV, fans, stainless steel utensils and all other items that can be reused at home are being collected at these centres. With the slogan ‘give if you have, take if you don’t,’ people are voluntarily bringing their unused items to BMC’s RRR centres. As a result, those items are being recycled through various methods, made reusable and distributed to those who do not have them,” BMC deputy commissioner N Ganesh Babu said.Besides collection of reusable household items, waste for RRR units is being collected from different micro composting centres and material recovery facilities. It will be the mandate of the private party to segregate them there and bring them to the three RRR units, where clothes, which are fit for reuse, will be washed. “In case clothes require stitching, they will be repaired,” Babu added.BMC officials said it has been decided that for such waste management practice, awareness will be generated among residents in apartments and other localities so that they maintain separate bins on their premises to store used and rejected apparel, shoes and other items. When the waste-collecting vehicles arrive, they can be dumped in them separately, thus making the RRR unit’s job easy.
