INDORE: A explosion at a firecracker factory in Tonk Kalan area of Dewas district on Thursday afternoon killed at least three labourers and injured 23 others, several critically.
Unconfirmed reports put the death toll at five, with locals fearing it could climb higher.
The blast was powerful enough to shake walls of nearby buildings. Some victims, with severe burn wounds and clothing stuck to their skin, were seen walking out of the site in shock.
Locals rushed to help before ambulances arrived, as rescue teams and fire tenders were dispatched to the spot.
SP Puneet Gehlot said details regarding the identities of the deceased, the condition of the injured, and the cause of the explosion would be known “only after a detailed assessment”.
Large quantities of gunpowder were also reportedly found lying in the open at the site earlier in the day.
The cause of the explosion is yet to be established.
