Pilibhit: Four friends, aged 22 to 25 years, who drove straight into the Sharda river in Pilibhit due to dense fog around 11:50pm on Friday, were luckily rescued by a contractual sailor, Bablu Majhi, 45, and a few sadhus staying along the riverbank.
Police said their vehicle fell from a bridge into the river while they were returning home in Pilibhit's Shanti Nagar village under Hajara police station.
As the river water began to enter the car, they somehow managed to reach the car's roof through the windows and started to scream at the top of their lungs. SHO of Hajara, Sharad Yadav, said the four men have been identified as Abhishek Kumar, Arjun Gupta, Aditya Verma and Anant Raghuvanshi. The car was pulled out of the river on Saturday with the help of a crane.
Praising Bablu Majhi's effort, SDM of Puranpur circle, Ajit Pratap Singh, said he has saved the lives of at least 25 people from drowning in the river in the past. Majhi works as a boatman on the riverbank.
