“Rewarded for being injured is wild”: Detroit reacts to Green Bay Packers WR Christian Watson’s 1-year, $13.25 million contract extension

The Detroit Times' jab at Christian Watson's contract extension sparked a heated online exchange with Green Bay Packers fans, highlighting the rivalry between the NFC North teams. The debate centered on Watson's injury history versus his potential, drawing parallels to Marcus Davenport's extension with the Lions despite his own injury struggles.

On September 10, the NFL’s official X account announced that the Green Bay Packers were signing wide receiver Christian Watson to a one-year extension worth $13.25 million. The Detroit Times’ official X account reacted to this news by stating, “Rewarded for being injured is wild lmao.” A fan instantly commented on that reaction, saying, “Being a lions fan and worrying about what the Packers are doing is wild. 😜.”

Packers fans took offense to Detroit's comment on Christian Watson’s extension

The Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers both belong to the North Division of the National Football Conference, so competition is to be expected. But some Packers fans took offense and responded to The Detroit Times’ comment. One fan in particular said, “You guys rewarded Goff for being permanently concussed and this surprises you?” Jared Goff suffered from a concussion twice. In December 2016, while playing against the Seattle Seahawks, and in January 2025, while playing against the Washington Commanders.
Another fan mentioned Detroit Lions' quarterback Jared Goff, “Ur qb gets made 50 million a year for standing in the pocket like a statue and getting sacked.”A third fan wrote, “Worry about your team being sh*t again.” A fourth fan mentioned the Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, saying, “Being salty about a week one loss is wild.”A fifth fan mentioned Micah Parsons, commenting, “Not as wild as you “not being worried” about the new packers with parsons.”
Another fan suggested, “Worry about running for 50 or more yards a game.”A fan expressed, “Packers get one win and empty the bank account, like they won the lottery by beating the Lions or something. 🤣🤣.”Another fan taunted, Let’s him focus on recovering instead of trying to come back too quick. You guys can talk trash in 15 years when you’re relevant again.

Yet, the Lions offered him a one-year extension worth $4.25 million in March 2025.While Davenport is a defensive end and Watson is a wide receiver, they now share a commonality: both received one-year contract extensions after suffering injuries.
