Kyle Whittingham is a longtime college football coach best known for leading the Utah Utes for 21 seasons and building them into a tough, winning program. Kyle Whittingham is now at the center of Michigan’s head coaching search. On Tuesday morning, ESPN reported that the Michigan Wolverines are focusing on the longtime Utah head coach as they look for their next leader. The report said Whittingham’s name is expected to be shared with top Michigan officials today. With approval, talks could move fast, and a deal could take shape soon.
This news comes just weeks after Whittingham stepped away from Utah following a strong 10–2 season. While he left the program, he made it clear he was not retiring from coaching. In a light moment, he even joked that he was “entering the transfer portal.” That comment kept the door open for a new job if the right chance came along. Now, that chance may be in Ann Arbor, where Michigan wants stability, toughness, and fewer off-field problems after recent seasons filled with headlines.
Kyle Whittingham’s Utah success and why Michigan sees him as a strong fit
Kyle Whittingham spent 21 seasons leading the Utah Utes and built the program into a steady winner. During his time in Salt Lake City, he finished with a 177–88 record.
Utah became known as a hard-nosed team that played tough football, stayed disciplined, and often ranked in the Top 25. The Utes were also regular conference title contenders under his watch.
Earlier this month, Whittingham stepped down after Utah closed the year at 10–2. Still, he told reporters his move was not the end of his coaching career. “I’m entering the transfer portal,” Whittingham said, making it clear he was open to listening. Utah is set to play in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl on New Year’s Eve, but Whittingham’s future quickly became a hot topic.
Inside Michigan circles, support for Whittingham has grown. Many believe he can build and keep a strong culture built on physical play and accountability. That matters to Michigan after the tenures of Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore, when the program faced constant headlines and pressure. Michigan wants a fresh start with fewer issues and a clear focus on football.
Kyle Whittingham is not the only name in the mix. On Christmas Eve, FootballScoop reported that Michigan added Todd Monken to its list. Multiple college and NFL sources told FootballScoop that Michigan has started vetting the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator and plans to speak with him this week.
Monken previously coached at Southern Mississippi and helped Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs win back-to-back national titles as offensive coordinator. Other names shared earlier include Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. For now, though, all eyes remain on Kyle Whittingham as Michigan weighs its next move.
