It covers parts of Kalna I community development block and Purbasthali I block. The Bhagirathi River flows through this region, and agriculture, particularly paddy, is the dominant economic activity. The constituency borders Nadia district across the river. In 2021, TMC's Swapan Debnath won the seat, defeating BJP's Rajib Kr Bhoumik by over 17,000 votes. In 2016, the TMC also held the seat. Swapan Debnath, the sitting MLA, has been renominated by the TMC for 2026. Notably, the BJP has not fielded a candidate here in 2026, leaving Congress's Rabindranath Mondal as the principal challenger. The absence of a BJP candidate significantly alters the contest's dynamics and could consolidate votes in a two-way fight. The seat is expected to remain comfortably with the TMC given the absence of BJP competition, though Congress may seek to attract voters disillusioned with the ruling party.
