In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election for Purbasthali Dakshin (268), Pran Krishna Tapadar of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured victory with 1,11,004 votes, defeating All India Trinamool Congress candidate Swapan Debnath, who polled 94,342 votes. The BJP won by a margin of 16,662 votes in a closely contested race. Other candidates from CPI(M)-L, Congress, and smaller parties finished far behind, while NOTA recorded 1,923 votes.
Purbasthali Dakshin (constituency no. 268) is located in Purba Bardhaman district and falls under the Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency is entirely rural, with its 2011 census population wholly classified as residing in rural areas.
It covers parts of Kalna I community development block and Purbasthali I block. The Bhagirathi River flows through this region, and agriculture, particularly paddy, is the dominant economic activity. The constituency borders Nadia district across the river.
In 2021, TMC's Swapan Debnath won the seat, defeating BJP's Rajib Kr Bhoumik by over 17,000 votes. In 2016, the TMC also held the seat. Swapan Debnath, the sitting MLA, has been renominated by the TMC for 2026. Notably, the BJP has not fielded a candidate here in 2026, leaving Congress's Rabindranath Mondal as the principal challenger. The absence of a BJP candidate significantly alters the contest's dynamics and could consolidate votes in a two-way fight. The seat is expected to remain comfortably with the TMC given the absence of BJP competition, though Congress may seek to attract voters disillusioned with the ruling party.
