NEW DELHI: In the Margherita constituency, BJP’s Bhaskar Sharma won against Rajjor Dal's candidate Rahul Chetry by a margin of 55,317 votes. Sharma secured a total of 86.349 votes in the closely watched fight.
The broader political outlook in Assam appears to favour the ruling alliance, as multiple exit polls have indicated that the BJP-led government is likely to secure a comfortable majority. If these projections hold, incumbent chief minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to continue in office.
Voting for all 126 constituencies in the state was held on April 9, with turnout crossing 85 percent, marking one of the highest participation rates in recent elections.
The strong turnout was evident across both rural and urban areas, highlighting widespread and active involvement from voters throughout the state.
Margherita is an assembly constituency in Assam's Tinsukia district, part of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha area, known for its coal mining history, tea estates, and industrial pockets. Bhaskar Sharma of BJP is the current MLA, elected in 2021 and re-elected from 2016.
In 2021, he won with 86,640 votes (57per cent share), defeating INC's Manoranjan Borgohain (28,140 votes, 18per cent) by a margin of 58,500 votes.
Infrastructure demands like better roads and flood control persist in this mining-tea hub, alongside unemployment beyond extractive industries. Environmental concerns from coal operations and youth migration for jobs challenge growth, with high voter engagement reflecting development aspirations.
