The area has historically been affected by Maoist extremism, given its geographic proximity to Jharkhand's Bokaro district and the broader Junglemahal belt. Tribal and backward-class communities form a significant part of the electorate. In 2021, BJP's Narahari Mahato won the seat by a margin of 12,200 votes over Congress's Phanibhushan Kumar. In 2016, the seat was likely held by the TMC. The 2026 election sees the TMC field Arjun Mahato in an effort to recapture this constituency. Notably, the same Phanibhushan Kumar who ran second for Congress in 2021 is again the Congress candidate in 2026. Joypur's Kurmi-Mahato community links and its Junglemahal geography make it a highly competitive seat with uncertain outcomes in 2026.
