Snoring every night? Doctors explain when it may signal obstructive sleep apnea and the tests and treatments that can help restore healthy sleep
Snoozing next to a chronic snorer? It might be time to pay attention. Dr. Vikas Agrawal, a leading expert in ENT, highlights that relentless snoring can be a red flag for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Look for concerning signs like choking sounds, feeling sluggish throughout the day, or waking up with headaches.
Snoring is something families joke about; children make inside jokes about the loud sleeper in the house and spouses complain about how snoring disturbs their own sleep. People often wake up snorers in the middle of the night, to ask them to “turn to the side. However, doctors caution that while snoring can be harmless, persistent or unusually loud snoring may be the body’s way of signalling an underlying sleep disorder. “Almost 40% of men in their 40s tend to snore, and in many cases it may not indicate a serious problem,” explains Dr Vikas Agrawal, Asia’s leading ENT surgeon. “However, people need to watch for certain warning signs that suggest it may be more than simple snoring,” he adds. One of the most common conditions linked to problematic snoring is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Many people with the condition are unaware of it, because the episodes occur while they are asleep. Dr. Agrawal elaborates,

How often do you believe sleep apnea in children is overlooked?
  • If the snoring is very loud and persistent, or if family members notice sudden pauses in breathing followed by gasping or choking, it may indicate OSA. People with the condition often wake up feeling unrefreshed despite a full night’s sleep.
  • Morning headaches, excessive daytime fatigue and grogginess are also common complaints.
  • If someone's blood pressure remains high despite medication, or if diabetes is not well controlled, OSA could be an underlying factor. Unexplained weight gain may also be linked to poor sleep quality.
While mild snoring without disturbed sleep may not always require treatment, snoring that disrupts sleep and leaves a person tired or anxious in the morning should not be ignored.

Lifetime cost

The cost of OSA in a person's lifetime is beyond just money terms. The cost in terms of quality of life is debilitating. Sleep apnea is also a major but often overlooked cause of road traffic accidents as excessive daytime sleepiness significantly impairs alertness, making drivers vulnerable to microsleeps and delayed reactions. addressing sleep apnea, therefore, has implications not only for individual health but also for public safety. In terms of personal relationships, erectile dysfunction and irritable bowel syndrome are potential outcomes of OSA. Left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke, and even sudden death. Interestingly, sleep apnea itself can contribute to fatigue, which often leads people to consume more carbohydrate-rich foods for quick energy. Over time, this can create a cycle in which poor sleep leads to overeating and weight gain, and the additional weight further worsens sleep apnea.Breaking this cycle usually requires addressing the sleep disorder along with lifestyle changes. Many people with nose block and snoring also suffer from claustrophobia and are afraid to enter lifts or crowded places.

Snoring in children

Unlike adults, snoring in children is generally never considered normal and should always be evaluated.“In children, the problem is usually not related to muscle relaxation during sleep. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are very common causes of snoring, which is why every case should be investigated,” says Dr. Agrawal.Sleep apnea in children can show up in unexpected ways. In the early stages, children may display hyperactivity, poor concentration and restlessness symptoms that are sometimes mistaken for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Bedwetting is another common symptom of sleep apnea in children.Over time, poor sleep can lead to lethargy and weight gain.
What causes sleepless nights
Sleepless nights can be caused by stress, anxiety, or an overactive mind.

Testing is simpler than most people think

Sleep apnea is both diagnosable and treatable—especially when detected early. Modern diagnostic tools such as in-clinic CT scans, sleep studies, and sleep endoscopy allow precise identification of the problem. “In India, a screening home sleep study usually costs around ₹2,000–₹3,000. A technician sets up the device at night, and the results are analysed the next morning,” Dr. Agrawal explains.Fitness trackers, smartwatches and health rings now come with features that monitor sleep quality and efficiency. Some mobile apps can even record snoring through the night, helping families understand what is happening during sleep.“These tools can act as a basic screening method at home and help people identify if their snoring may be abnormal,” says Dr. Agrawal.Lifestyle habits can also play a significant role in snoring and sleep apnea. Weight gain and unhealthy eating patterns are among the most common risk factors.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the underlying cause. For most early cases (mild to moderate) treatment may involve addressing nasal blockages, sinus issues or structural problems such as a deviated septum through minimally invasive day care procedures. Sometimes, dental treatments can also help if jaw alignment contributes to airway obstruction. For severe OSA, the most widely recommended treatment is CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, which delivers a steady flow of air through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep.Because sleep apnea can involve multiple factors, managing it often requires a multi-specialty approach, involving ENT specialists, sleep physicians and sometimes dental experts.Advanced technologies like coblation have further refined surgical treatment, making procedures safer, more effective, and less invasive. The procedure can be daycare, painless and bloodless and can be performed even in small children. Doctors emphasise that identifying and treating sleep apnea early can prevent the condition from progressing and causing long-term health complications. While occasional snoring may not be a cause for concern, persistent snoring accompanied by disturbed sleep is often a signal that something isn’t right. Recognising the warning signs early and seeking timely medical evaluation can make a significant difference to overall health and quality of life. It is vital for insurance companies to cover all treatment modalities for sleep apnea as the cost of treatment of sleep apnea is much lesser than cost of consequences of untreated OSA in form of serious diseases and traffic accidents.

About the AuthorVikas Agrawal

Dr. Vikas K. Agrawal is widely considered ‘the father of sleep surgery’ in India. As Asia’s pioneering ENT surgeon with close to 10,000 surgeries, he is celebrated for his ground-breaking work in sleep apnea, sinus, and snoring. He has contributed to generating global consensus that the lifetime cost of sleep-related ailments is very high and that they merit medical intervention. Having formulated India’s first guidelines for surgical intervention in sleep apnea, he has published papers that have shifted the paradigm on the understanding and treatment of a vast spectrum of otolaryngological issues such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). He is also credited with the first Robotic tongue-based surgery for OSA in the country.
