Vijayawada: Health minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav has ordered a comprehensive report into allegations of irregularities in the procurement of medical equipment in
Andhra Pradesh, following reports that alleged medical equipment was being purchased at inflated prices, unnecessary devices were being procured, and technical specifications were allegedly tailored to benefit select suppliers.
Against this backdrop, the health minister instructed secretary (medical and health) Saurabh Gaur to conduct a comprehensive probe and submit a report into the allegations that firms previously declared ineligible were being allowed to participate again in the procurement process.
Stressing that the medical equipment procurement should be carried out strictly according to rules and in a transparent manner, the health minister directed officials to propose comprehensive reforms to strengthen the procurement system and improve confidence among suppliers. The health minister further observed that the entire procurement process, including preparation of proposals, framing of technical specifications, tender conditions and final approvals, is handled by officials. He instructed the department to recommend safeguards to prevent loopholes and ensure accountability.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APMSIDC) executive director Krishnamohan met the minister and clarified his role in the procurement process.
According to officials, he informed the minister that he had no role in finalising technical specifications and had only suggested reconsideration in two cases.
He reportedly stated that doctors had proposed specifications for dental patient chairs mentioning a particular company name, which violated procurement norms, prompting him to seek a review. In another instance, he suggested reconsideration of the purchase of 16-slice CT scan machines in view of declining procurement and supply trends. He denied involvement in any irregularities.
The minister also reviewed other administrative matters in the health department, including the proposed 2026 general transfer process. He directed officials to strengthen the online transfer mechanism to ensure faster and error-free transfers, while also examining exemptions granted to employee union representatives.
