Dumka: A jackal entered a house and mauled a three-month-old girl to death at Lakhinarayanpur village under Taranagar panchayat in Pakur district early on Saturday, police said.
According to reports, Musfera Bibi, a resident of Ramchandrapur village, was staying at her maternal home along with her children. At night, the jackal sneaked in and attacked the sleeping child, family members said. After killing the infant, the jackal attacked three-year-old Yasmin Khatoon, who was also asleep in the room. Hearing Yasmin’s screams, family members rushed in and raised an alarm, forcing the jackal to flee.
Yasmin sustained minor injuries and was rushed to Sadar hospital, where doctors said her condition is stable. A team from Muffasil police station reached the village after being informed and initiated a probe. Police examined the infant’s remains and recorded statements of family members.
“Villagers have been advised to remain alert, especially at night when jackals stray into human habitation,” said Gaurav Kumar, officer in-charge of Muffasil police station, adding that forest officials would be informed to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
