Theni: Dam safety is not limited to structural maintenance alone but requires continuous public participation and preparedness, said M Janaki, chief engineer, water resources department, State Dam Safety Organisation (SDSO).Speaking at an awareness programme dam safety measures, emergency action plans, and water conservation held at the Vaigai dam on Wednesday, she stressed that regular inspections, timely maintenance, and community awareness are key to preventing disasters. "Safety is a shared responsibility, and preparedness at every level is the best way to safeguard lives and resources," she said.Officials explained that the Dam Safety Act, passed by Parliament in 2021, established the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) and State Dam Safety Organisations to oversee the inspection and upkeep of dams.Participants were briefed on the importance of clearing encroachments along water channels, reporting abnormal conditions around dams, and ensuring coordination between local communities and officials. Awareness campaigns are also being extended to schools and colleges to educate students on water safety, conservation, and pollution prevention. More than 500 people participated.A rally, street plays, and a tree plantation drive were held. Competitions in essay writing, drawing, poetry, and public speaking were conducted for students, with prizes awarded to winners.Theni district collector Ranjeet Singh, Periyakulam sub-collector Rajat Beetan, Theni MP Thangathamizh Selvan participated.
