Three snatchings in city in two days
Kolkata: Three separate snatching incidents were reported across the city between May 14 and May 16, leaving the victims — two of them senior citizens — shaken and police probing possible linkages, officials said on Sunday. Police said, all three incidents involved men on bikes. The first incident involved a reported snatching of a 9g gold chain from 70-year-old Chhabi Das on Saturday at around 6 am near Mohan Apartment on Kazi Para Road under Parnashree Police jurisdiction. The complainant, Ankita Bose, 45, lodged a complaint saying her mother was on a morning walk when an unknown bike-borne assailant came from behind, grabbed a gold chain with a peacock-design pendant and sped away into a narrow lane. In the second incident, Reena Bhattacharya, 64, a resident of Garfa Main Road, said two men snatched her gold chain from behind as she stood near her doorway around 8.45 pm on Friday. Bhattacharya described one man wearing a green T-shirt and the other in blue; the green-shirted suspect was last seen running away after getting off a bike. Neighbours chaseed him but rain and poor visibility hampered the pursuit. In third incident, 37-year-old Binod Yadav of Purba Panchannagram alleged that on Thursday at about 10.30 pm two unknown men on an unregistered motorcycle snatched his mobile phone and a wallet containing Rs 11,000 on Darga Road. Yadav, who works at a wine shop on Eliot Road, told officers a crowd gathered earlier that night after a scuffle and that the culprits fled on a black-coloured motorcycle. Police have recorded his statement and are examining nearby CCTV footage and questioning eyewitnesses.
