HUBBALLI: Rising temperatures have become a serious public health concern, prompting the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) to begin work on a long-term urban heat resilience action plan with technical support from specialised organisations. The initiative is aimed at reducing the health risks associated with extreme heat, especially among vulnerable sections of the population.
The plan will be prepared with support from C40 Cities, CDD India and Selco Foundation. These organisations are expected to provide technical guidance and practical solutions for addressing urban heat challenges. The civic body also intends to identify selected locations where relief measures can be implemented in a targeted manner.
Awareness drives are being conducted to use heat-resistant white coatings on roofs, application of such coatings on govt buildings, use of heat-proof construction material and creation of heat-resistant spaces in community halls. These halls could serve as shelters during peak summer, particularly for people living in tin sheds who are more exposed to intense heat.
HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali said that experts have already conducted a study in Hubballi and Dharwad.
Based on these inputs, the corporation will draft a plan and begin its implementation after the general body's approval.
Health staff has identified dehydration, heat oedema, diarrhoea and fever as some of the major effects of prolonged exposure to extreme heat. In response, the civic body is planning a range of preventive and relief-oriented measures to strengthen the city's preparedness and resilience. The proposed action plan will focus on awareness campaigns, support for underprivileged communities and elderly residents, promotion of cool roofs and expansion of green cover across the twin cities.
Dr Shridhar Dandappanavar, medical chief, said that public awareness among vulnerable groups will be an important part of the strategy.
People are advised to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day, wear loose clothes and stay hydrated.
