NEW DELHI: Panic unfolded near the Rajghat traffic signal in central Delhi after the brakes of a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus allegedly failed, forcing the driver to take a split-second decision and deliberately ram the vehicle into a road divider to avert a possible tragedy.
According to police, a PCR call reporting an accident involving a DTC bus was received at the IP Estate police station, following which officers rushed to the spot. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the bus, which was travelling from the Sarai Kale Khan side towards Rajghat, developed a technical fault while on the move.
Police said the bus was not carrying any passengers at the time, and only the driver and conductor were on board. As the vehicle approached the busy signal, the driver reportedly realised that the brakes were not responding properly, police said.
Fearing that the vehicle could go out of control and harm commuters and motorists on the crowded stretch, the driver reportedly steered it towards the divider to bring it to a halt.
The impact stopped the bus before any major mishap could occur on the busy stretch. Police said no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident, and both the driver and conductor escaped safely. Police are further probing the matter to ascertain the exact sequence of events and verify the claims.
