BJP leader seeks sacrilege FIR into 1984 events at Golden Temple

Amritsar: BJP leader and former bureaucrat Jagmohan Raju who had unsuccessfully contested the Amritsar East assembly elections in 2022 has sought registration of an FIR under the new anti-sacrilege law in connection with alleged acts of sacrilege, desecration, and damage caused to saroops/birs of Guru Granth Sahib during the events of June 1984 at Golden Temple.In a complaint to police commissioner, Raju sought invocation of provisions relating to criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), besides other applicable penal provisions, and called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported damage to various saroops/birs of Guru Granth Sahib located within the Harmandir Sahib Complex and adjoining religious premises during the first week of June 1984.He alleged that historical accounts, documentary material, eyewitness testimonies, and records available in the public domain necessitate a formal criminal investigation under the statutory framework now created by the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.
