Chandigarh: The Supreme Court collegium has approved the elevation of 10 advocates as judges of the Punjab and Haryana high court.
The decision was taken during a meeting held on Monday.
Among those cleared for appointment are Minderjeet Yadav, former chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana; Major Navdeep Singh, former officer of the Territorial Army; Harmeet Singh Deol, senior deputy advocate general, Punjab; Monica Chhibber Sharma, senior standing counsel for various Punjab panels; Divya Sharma, senior panel counsel for the Union of India; and Rajesh Gaur, Sunil Bindlish, Ravinder Malik, and Puja Chopra.
The HC is currently functioning with 58 judges, including 16 women, against a sanctioned strength of 85. The court faces a major backlog, with more than 4.10 lakh cases currently pending. This includes over 25,000 matters that have been awaiting adjudication for more than two decades.
