Bhopal: Finding few takers and facing mounting operating costs and losses, with “income a trickle and expenses a torrent”, Bhopal Metro is now eyeing a fresh burst of wind in its sails through a new initiative that aims to add celebratory vibes to normal passenger experience.
Running at a deficit since the start of operations on its priority corridor — from Subhash Nagar depot to Bhopal AIIMS, the management has been forced to explore alternative revenue streams.
Towards this end, the Metro has now introduced an innovative initiative called ‘Celebration on Wheels’.
The idea is to reimagine Bhopal Metro not just as a transportation system but also as a venue for special events. Under this scheme, individuals can rent Metro coaches or station spaces for occasions such as birthday parties, pre-wedding shoots, film shoots, kitty parties, and other creative gatherings.
Metro officials believe this approach will boost non-fare revenue while also strengthening public engagement with the system.
However, experts pointed out that the move only highlights the desperation of the Metro authorities amid the struggle to generate sufficient income from regular passenger traffic.
However, S. Krishna Chaitanya, managing director, Bhopal Metro, said the move saying the initiative reflects the city’s evolving lifestyle, offering people a modern and secure environment to celebrate milestones.
