As the monsoon clouds hover over Bhopal, the city braces for a deluge of melody and rhythm. The 21st edition of the Baadal Raag Festival, starting today at Bharat Bhavan, promises to be a celebration where raindrops meet ragas in perfect harmony.
A Tribute to the Rain Gods
"Monsoon and Spring are the two seasons that have garnered maximum attention from writers, poets, singers, dancers, and all those who thrive on creativity. So, Baadal Raag is quintessentially an ode to the rain gods," says Premkumar Shukla, chief administrative officer of Bharat Bhavan. The festival's lineup reflects this tribute, featuring luminaries and emerging talents alike.
Day 1: Begum Parveen Sultana – The Empress of Khayal
The festival opens with a vocal duet by Ritesh and Rajnish Mishra, setting the stage for the legendary Begum Parveen Sultana. Known for her extraordinary vocal range, Sultana's performances are a blend of meditative khayals and powerful thumris. Her presence at Bharat Bhavan is a rare treat for the audience, making this a night not to be missed.
Day 2: Rahul Sharma – The Santoor Virtuoso
On September 11, the stage will resonate with the santoor's enchanting tones as maestro Rahul Sharma takes the spotlight. Son of the legendary Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Rahul has elevated the santoor from a Kashmiri folk instrument to a respected classical entity.
His performances, blending tradition with innovation, promise an unforgettable experience.
Day 3: Dance and Literature – A Fusion of Arts
The festival continues with a vibrant display of Indian classical dance. Young artist Idika will present a traditional Bharatanatyam recital, followed by an elegant Kathak performance by Yasmeen Singh and her troupe. The evening concludes with a blend of literature and music, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of India.

The performances commence at 7 PM, and entry is free for the public. Whether you're a connoisseur of classical music or a newcomer eager to experience the magic of monsoon melodies, Baadal Raag offers a feast for the senses.
