Bareilly: A 60ft-high water tank in Sardar Nagar gram panchayat in Bareilly district, built nearly two years ago, collapsed on Monday, injuring eight people and killing two cows.
The tank, built at a cost of Rs 3.62 crore, collapsed as its pillars gave way after the recent rainfall. The injured -- Dori Lal (32), Arjun (30), Veerpal (48), Ravindra (50) and Vedpal (45) -- were taken to a private hospital in the city.
Vedpal said he had gone to tie his cattle when the tank collapsed, trapping him under the debris. Two cows were also buried in the rubble.
The construction of the tank was awarded to a private construction company on Dec 21, 2022, and the structure was completed about a year-and-a-half ago.
SP (South) Anshika Verma said, “An FIR has been lodged against the construction agency, NCC Limited, under BNS sections 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 316 (criminal breach of trust), along with relevant sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.”
The FIR states that the collapse within such a short period points to the use of substandard material and technical negligence.
