NDA, BJP, UDF lead as four-state counting gathers pace
Counting is underway across four state assemblies and early trends point to contrasting pictures in each. In Assam, where 126 seats are at stake and the majority mark stands at 64, NDA holds a tally of 97 seats, having won 28 and leading in 69 more, putting it well past the majority threshold on current leads. The Congress-led grouping has a tally of 22, while candidates from other parties and independents cumulatively account for 7 seats in the state. In Tamil Nadu, the 234-seat assembly requires 118 for a majority. SPA has won 7 and is leading in 53 for a tally of 60, while NDA is leading in 55 seats with no wins declared yet, giving it a tally of 55. Candidates from other parties and independents cumulatively lead in Tamil Nadu with a tally of 115, still 3 seats short of the majority mark on current trends. West Bengal, the largest contest with 294 seats and a majority mark of 148, sees BJP leading in 168 seats with 11 declared, putting its tally at 179 and crossing the majority threshold if those leads hold. TMC has won 2 and is leading in 104 for a tally of 106, trailing BJP by a considerable margin at this stage. Candidates from other parties and independents cumulatively hold a tally of 8 in the state. In Kerala, where 140 seats are up for grabs and 71 are needed for a majority, UDF has won 68 and is leading in 19 more for a tally of 87, crossing the majority mark on current leads. LDF has won 30 and is leading in 6, giving it a tally of 36. Candidates from other parties and independents cumulatively hold a tally of 17 seats in Kerala.
