Watch: Olive Ridley hatchlings were just seen at Puri beach—here’s why it matter

A recent post by sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik (@sudarsansand), the famous international sand artist and Padma Shri awardee, on his his official account on X, showcases a rare sight at Puri’s Blue Flag beach—groups of Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings making their way towards the sea. While such moments are brief, they draw attention to the larger role of Odisha as one of the most important regions in the world for the conservation of Olive Ridley turtles. The post reads, “Today the blue flag beach Puri , for the first time witnessed hatchlings Olive Ridley turtles heading towards sea in a group which is something really an incredible moment. I captured this video early morning.”The coastal area of Odisha along the Bay of Bengal is known for hosting mass nesting events, also known as arribadas, of Olive Ridley sea turtles, during which hundreds of thousands of these turtles come onto the shores to lay their eggs. The state has some of the most important nesting sites of these turtles in the world, including the Gahirmatha Beach, Rushikulya Beach, and the mouth of the Devi River.Of these, the Gahirmatha Beach is known as the largest nesting site of Olive Ridley sea turtles in the world, making Odisha the focal point of the survival of this particular species of turtles, which is Vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although Puri is known for being a pilgrim center as well as a beach resort, the occasional spotting of hatchlings on the shore indicates that turtle activities are not restricted to certain places on the coast of the state.This does not mean that turtles are nesting in large numbers, as in Gahirmatha or Rushikulya, but it is significant in another way:This is the initial stage in the journey of the hatchlings towards the sea, and any alteration, such as man-made illumination or the presence of humans, can make a great impact on them.Various measures have been put in place to conserve Olive Ridley sea turtles during the nesting and hatching seasons in Odisha: From the traveler’s perspective, the beaches of Odisha offer something more than just beauty, as they are a part of a globally important marine ecosystem. Places such as Gahirmatha and Rushikulya are not just beaches frequented by tourists, as they are of great importance to the ecosystem, while places such as Puri demonstrate the connection between tourism and nature.The coastline of Odisha still serves as an important habitat for Olive Ridley sea turtles, with one of the largest nesting populations in the world. The spotting of such a turtle in a place such as Puri serves as a reminder of the ecological importance of the region.
