All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s A Anbalagan won, defeating Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s S Siva by a margin of 1,026 votes.
Oupalam witnessed a battleground for two distinct political eras in the 2026 assembly elections. The incumbent Annibal Kennedy, defending the DMK (SPA) banner, sought to prove that his 2021 victory wasn't just a fluke. Standing in his way was A Anbalagan, the veteran who led the AIADMK (NDA) charge in an attempt to reclaim the territory he commanded for two decades. The contest was further complicated by S Siva of the TVK, who entered the fray to challenge the established two-party dominance.
Oupalam, an urban assembly constituency in Puducherry, is located in the central part of the Union Territory and is known for its dense residential layout and long-standing political relevance.
The coastal urban constituency in Puducherry was historically defined by the long-standing dominance of A Anbalagan (AIADMK), who represented the area for four consecutive terms from 2001 to 2016. However, the 2021 assembly elections marked a major turning point when Annibal Kennedy of the DMK secured a decisive victory, polling 13,433 votes and defeating the incumbent Anbalagan by a margin of 4,780 votes. This shift ended a 20-year era of AIADMK control and signalled a new preference for the SPA alliance in this pocket.
This constituency consistently showed high engagement, recording 85.06% voter turnout (VTR) in 2021. Due to the heightened three-way competition, Oupalam saw a surge of 89.96% VTR this year.
The 2026 Puducherry Assembly elections took place on April 9, recording a historic voter turnout of 91.23%, with results declared on May 4. The contest shifted from a traditional two-way battle into a high-stakes three-way struggle between the ruling NDA (led by the AINRC and BJP), the SPA (anchored by the Congress and DMK), and the newly formed TVK–NMK alliance headed by actor-politician Vijay.
