In Kanniyakumari, AIADMK candidate N. Thalavai Sundaram won the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election against DMK candidate R. Mahesh and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate S. R. Madhavan.The Kanniyakumari constituency is one of 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, where elections are expected in April. Currently uheld by chief minister MK Stalin-led the DMK, the seat has historically swung between the incumbent ruling party and its main rival, the AIADMK, the two Dravidian parties that have dominated the state’s politics since the 1960s. The current MLA from Kanniyakumari is AIADMK’s Thalavai Sundaram, who won the 2021 assembly election by defeating DMK’s S Austin by over 16,000 votes. This result reversed the 2016 outcome, when Austin had edged past Sundaram by 5,912 votes. In 2021, the constituency had 279,721 registered voters, of whom 223,778 turned out to cast their ballots.
