Neyam Makkal Kazhagam’s G Nehru alias Couppoussamy won from Orleampeth constituency in Puducherry, defeating DMK’s S Gopal by a margin of 1,201 votes.
Orleampeth is a busy urban constituency sitting right in the heart of Puducherry city, home to a mix of middle-class families, traders, and working residents. On 9 April , three candidates were in the mix — A Gandhi for the AIADMK (NDA), S Gopal (DMK) for the SPA alliance with the Congress, and sitting MLA G Nehru Kuppusamy for the TVK (alliance with NMK). Kuppusamy, notably, is now contesting under a party banner after his independent win last time.
DMK's R Siva was the familiar name here for many years, winning in 1996, 2001, 2006, and again in 2016. In 2011 and 2021, Kuppusamy won the seat — first on an AINRC ticket, then as an independent, beating Gopal by 2,093 votes. Over 20,000 of the constituency's 24,000-odd voters turned out that year.
The voter turnout in Orlempeth reached 89.52% by 7 pm on the voting day. on April 9. Earlier in the day, turnout stood at 17.62% at 9 am, rising to 36.82% by 11 am. It further increased to 57.04% at 1 pm, 72.22% by 3 pm, and 86.87% by 5 pm.
