In Madurantakam, Maragatham Kumaravel K of AIADMK secured a narrow victory, polling 69,284 votes. She defeated TVK’s Ezhil Katharine Ezhilmalai by a margin of 7,194 votes. DMK’s S. Amulu Ponmalar finished third with 59,838 votes, as the constituency saw a closely contested three-way fight ending in an AIADMK win.The Madurantakam constituency witnessed a closely watched urban-rural transition battle with the AIADMK re-nominating the incumbent K. Maragatham Kumaravel, who sought to consolidate her hold on the segment. She was challenged by the S. Amulu Ponmalar(DMK), while the new formidable entrant, Ezhil Katharine Ezhilmalai, representing the TVK. The 2021 election saw K. Maragatham (AIADMK) secure a victory with 86,646 votes (46.6% vote share), narrowly defeating C. E. Sathya (DMK), who polled 83,076 votes. The victory margin was a tight 3,570 votes. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by S. Pugazhenthi (DMK), who polled 73,693 votes, defeating the AIADMK’s C. K. Thamizharasan by 2,957 votes. The voter turnout this year was 92.3%, representing a substantial increase from the 80.57% recorded in the 2021 elections.
Madurantakam (Constituency No. 35), located in the Chengalpattu district and reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Castes, is renowned for its historic significance and ecological wealth. Landmarks like the ancient Eri-Katha Ramar Temple and the Madurantakam Lake—the second largest lake in Tamil Nadu—define its identity. A diverse electorate, comprising agricultural laborers, traditional artisans, and an increasing number of residents connected to the expanding industrial corridors of southern Chennai, makes it a pivotal seat for gauging rural development and resource management sentiments. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
