BJP's Suvendu Adhikari defeated West Bengal chief minister
Mamata Banerjee in her Bhowanipore stronhold, winning the most keenly-watched contest in the elections.
Adhikari, a former aide of Banerjee, won 73,917 votes, Election Commission's website showed. The chief minister, who was the sitting MLA from Bhowanipore, received 58,812 votes, losing by 15,105 votes.
Bhabanipur Assembly constituency is one of the 294 constituencies in West Bengal. It is a general category seat located in the Kolkata district and forms part of the Kolkata Dakshin parliamentary constituency. The seat has long been associated with Mamata Banerjee and the All India
Trinamool Congress (AITC). This time BJP's Suvendu Adhikari is giving tough contest.
In 2021, Banerjee won Bhowanipore bypoll with 65,520 votes (47.67%), defeating Deepa Dasmunshi of the
Indian National Congress, who secured 40,219 votes, while the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Chandra Kumar Bose came third. After her defeat in Nandigram in the 2021 Assembly elections, Banerjee contested the Bhabanipur bypoll later that year and won decisively, regaining her place in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Bhabanipur has remained politically significant, often seen as Mamata’s stronghold.
