In Tapan, Bharatiya Janata Party's Budhrai Tudu emerged victorious with 1,05,780 total votes. Trinamool Congress' Chintamoni Biha trail behind with just 68,793 votes.
In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, the Tapan (ST) constituency will see a three-way contest between Chintamoni Biha of TMC, Budhrai Tudu of BJP, and Bankim Chandra Toppo of Congress.
Tapan is a Scheduled Tribe-reserved assembly constituency situated in Dakshin Dinajpur district and falls under the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency. The seat covers the Dwip Khanda, Gophanagar, Harsura, Malancha, and Tapan Chandipur gram panchayats of the Tapan community development block, along with several panchayats from the Balurghat community development block. The constituency is predominantly rural and has a significant tribal population, which historically gave the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) a firm grip over the seat for decades.
In 2016, TMC's Bachchu Hansda defeated RSP's Raghu Urow to win the seat, representing a continuation of TMC's 2011 success in the area. However, 2021 brought a dramatic reversal: the BJP's Budhrai Tudu defeated the TMC's Kalpana Kisku by a narrow margin of 1,650 votes, reflecting the broader BJP surge in Bengal's tribal belts during that election cycle. The seat is historically competitive, and with TMC fielding a new candidate in Chintamoni Biha this time, the 2026 contest promises to be closely fought. The BJP will be seeking to defend its 2021 gain with sitting MLA Budhrai Tudu, while Congress's Bankim Chandra Toppo rounds out the contest.
