NEW DELHI: Md Nawsad Siddique of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) won the Bhangar constituency with 1,26,555 votes, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Saokat Molla by a margin of 32,088 votes. Molla secured 94,467 votes. BJP candidate Jayanta Gayen finished third with 30,177 votes.
Twenty-one candidates contested from Bhangar in West Bengal's 2026 Assembly Election, along with NOTA.
Bhangar is a politically sensitive and largely rural assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas, falling under the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency. It comprises gram panchayats from Bhangar I and the entirety of Bhangar II community development block.
The constituency has a predominantly Muslim electorate and has historically witnessed intense political competition.
In 2021, Bhangar made national headlines when Nawsad Siddique of the ISF — backed by the Abbas Siddiqui-led outfit — defeated TMC's Rezaul Karim by over 26,000 votes. This was the only seat ISF won in the entire state.
In 2016, TMC's Abdur Razzak Molla won the seat comfortably, defeating CPI(M) by over 18,000 votes. Molla had previously won for the CPI(M) in the 1980s and 1990s before switching to TMC. Bhangar had earlier seen significant unrest over the proposed power grid project in the area.
