AIADMK's Venkatachalam G emerges victorious, securing 86498 votes, against
DMK's Midhun Chakravarthy M, by a margin of 19105 votes.
Mettur Assembly constituency is located in Salem district of Tamil Nadu and forms part of the Dharmapuri Lok Sabha constituency. The seat lies in an industrial and agrarian belt centred around the Mettur Dam region and has witnessed electoral contests involving the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and regional parties such as the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,63,189 electors, with 2,07,574 valid votes polled.
AIADMK candidate Semmalai S secured victory with 72,751 votes, defeating DMK candidate Parthiban S R, who received 66,469 votes. The victory margin stood at 6,282 votes, indicating a relatively close contest between the two major Dravidian parties.
Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, Mettur had 2,12,992 electors, with 1,69,607 valid votes recorded. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate Parthiban S R won the seat with 75,672 votes, narrowly defeating Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) candidate Mani G K, who secured 73,078 votes.
The winning margin of 2,594 votes reflected a tightly contested race.
Historically, the constituency has seen varied political outcomes. PMK candidate Mani G K won the seat in 2006, while AIADMK’s Sundarambal S secured victory in 2001. Earlier, DMK candidate P Gopal won the constituency in 1996, indicating that Mettur has experienced shifting political preferences shaped by regional alliances and broader electoral trends in Tamil Nadu.
