Amta election results 2026: BJP’s Amit Samanta defeats TMC’s Sukanta Kumar Paul by 4,454 votes
Amit Samanta of the Bharatiya Janata Party defeats Sukanta Kumar Paul of the All India Trinamool Congress in Amta, winning by a margin of 4,454 votes after all 20 rounds of counting.Amta in Howrah district is currently represented by Sukanto Kumar Paul of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He won the 2021 election with 1,02,445 votes (49per cent vote share), defeating BJP’s Debtanu Bhattacharya’s 76,240 votes (37per cent), by a margin of 26,205 votes. Key issues include irrigation and drainage for paddy and vegetable farming across Amta‑I and Amta‑II blocks, better rural roads and bridges linking villages to Howrah and Uluberia markets, and access to drinking water. Demand for expanded government health centres, schools, and non‑farm jobs to supplement agriculture is prominent, alongside pressure on local civic services from peri‑urban growth. Amta was a Congress bastion under Asit Mitra (2011, 2016) and CPI(M) stronghold earlier (Pratyush Mukherjee won 2001–2006), but Sukanto Paul’s 2021 victory consolidated TMC’s takeover of this politically volatile seat. It falls under the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency, retained by TMC’s Sajda Ahmed in 2024 with a margin of 2,18,673 votes, reinforcing party alignment.
