Demow Assembly Election Results 2026

Demow Assembly constituency is one of the 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, created as a new seat in the 2023 delimitation exercise. It is located in the Sivasagar-Charaideo corridor of upper Assam, an area with deep historical roots in the Ahom civilisation, and falls under the Jorhat Lok Sabha segment. The constituency draws from the tea and oil town belt between Sibsagar and Sonari. The main political parties in Assam include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). As a newly created constituency, Demow does not carry a direct 2021 result. Adjacent Sibsagar in 2021 was won by independent Akhil Gogoi (Raijor Dal) with 57,219 votes, defeating BJP's Surabhi Rajkonwari by 11,875 votes — one of the few instances of an independent activist defeating the ruling alliance in Assam. Nearby Nazira was narrowly won by Congress's Debabrata Saikia by just 683 votes. In 2026, BJP fields Sushanta Borgohain while Congress fields Ajoy Kumar Gogoi for Demow. The 2026 Assam Assembly elections will test Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP-led government, which swept to power with a comfortable majority in 2021. With the opposition Congress-AIUDF combine seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment, every constituency will be a crucial battleground in deciding whether the state returns a second consecutive BJP government.
