Workshop on migratory birds held in Trichy
Trichy: As a part of World Migratory Bird Day celebrated on May 9, Trichy district forest department conducted a workshop for college students on Saturday to help them understand the characteristics of unique migratory birds and their role in ecosystem such as pollination and seed dispersal. Students were taken for a field visit to spot common migratory birds at Nalanda Agriculture College near MR Palayam reserve forest area. Organised by forest range officer J Ravi, students were explained about the necessity to protect the habitat and breeding of migratory birds. More than 100 college students were sensitised about different types of migratory birds, their origins and their unique intercontinental journeys. Officials also explained steps to identify migratory birds. During the interactions, students were informed about food intake of birds, reasons to take a pitstop during their intercontinental journeys at prominent bird sanctuaries such as Karaivetti in Ariyalur and Point Calimere in Nagapattinam, different types of calls made by common migratory birds, and rare and endangered bird species. Students learned to differentiate between different types of migratory birds such as flamingos, ducks and pelicans. Quiz competitions were conducted at the end of the workshop.
