Trichy: Trichy district police have retrieved 80 sovereigns of gold ornaments that were stolen from the public since Oct 2025. Police returned the valuables, including two-wheelers and cars, to respective owners after verifying proofs.
Police said across the 36 rural police stations in the district, 32 theft cases and nine burglary cases were registered since Oct 2025. A total of 64 accused were arrested in these cases. Based on investigations, police retrieved 80 sovereigns of gold ornaments, one diamond ring, a pair of diamond earrings, Rs 49,700 in cash, eight two-wheelers, two cars, one laptop and 141 mobile phones.
Trichy superintendent of police S Selvanagarathinam handed over the recovered valuables to the owners at his office on Sunday. Appreciating police officers for the coordinated efforts in retrieving the valuables in a short span, the SP said the district police had also retrieved 37 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 30,000 in cash in connection with eight criminal cases reported between Jan and Oct 2025.
He added that once in six months, the rural police have been directed to return retrieved ornaments in theft and burglary cases to the respective owners. The SP urged the residents' welfare associations and house owners to install CCTV cameras on their properties and inform local police stations before leaving home for outstation.
