Patna: Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) arrested 10 prisoners, who escaped after a jailbreak in Nepal, from the Surasand and Bhittha areas of Sitamarhi district late Tuesday night. There were two Indian nationals among the apprehended prisoners.
The SSB handed over all prisoners to the local police, with seven prisoners being transferred to Bhittha outpost and three to Surasand police station.
Police sources said a massive jailbreak occurred late Tuesday evening at Jaleswar jail in Mahottari (Nepal). The incident sent shockwave across the border regions, prompting heightened security measures in the area. All the arrested are undertrial prisoners, according to the officials.
Confirming the arrest, Bhittha police station in charge, Manoj Kumar, said, “Six Nepali prisoners were handed over to us, including Ramgulam Mahto, Vinod Rai, Mojahid Ansari, Surendra Sah Sonar, Indresh Mandal and Krishna Kumar Mahto. The other two Indian national prisoners were identified as Mohan Kumar and Guddu Kumar.”
Surasand SHO Dhananjay Kumar Pandey confirmed the detention of two more Nepalese citizens—Riyaz Dafali and Rajesh Tamang.
Authorities said while the situation remained under control, vigilance will continue.
The SSB continues to maintain round-the-clock surveillance along Bihar’s 729-km-long porous border with Nepal, spread across seven districts: East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Araria, Supaul, and Kishanganj.
Sitamarhi superintendent of police (SP) Amit Ranjan said special watch is being maintained on suspicious people and their activities. Regular patrols and coordinated checks with the SSB are underway to maintain law and order and ensure tight border security. Sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs) are supervising the surveillance in border areas.
