New ‘Addition’ To Mistakes In NU Report Card
Nagpur: The Nagpur University, which earlier blamed affiliated college clerks for incorrect entries that led to students failing in Winter 2025 examinations, reportedly itself erred with glaring calculation errors reflecting on the marksheets issued for results announced on May 10. Errors were spotted in first, third and fifth-semester marksheets of regular and backlog students. Hundreds of students complained of discrepancies in the ‘maximum marks' column on their scorecards. In several cases, the marksheets mentioned the total marks as ‘150' even though the combined theory and practical marks added up to only 120 as per the marks scheme. Many of the students were also marked ‘failed'.The errors were not limited to the marking scheme alone. Students also reported major mistakes in the marks awarded column — for example, the final tally for theory marks ‘16' and internal marks ‘8' was shown as ‘76' — triggering confusion and panic among examinees awaiting admissions and further academic processes. As reported earlier, the results for Winter 2025 exmainations were declared after a delay of three to four months, missing the 45-day deadline. Last week, thousands of students reported blunders in their marksheets, which not only frustrated them but also consumed their precious time in running after corrections amid Summer exam. After TOI inquired about the "goof-ups" on Monday morning, the exam section started uploading revised results for affected students by evening. As per revised results, it became evident that the ‘30' practical marks column was missing in the scheme. Yet, in a few cases, students said, the calculation still appeared incorrect.Deputy registrar Motiram Tadas told TOI that some fields may have been left out in the marks scheme as the examinations are being held for three different patterns. First-year students are enrolled as per NEP, while later-semester students are in old patterns of Credit-Based System (CBS) and Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). "Many colleges and external examiners are still not aware of the marking scheme. In some cases, it is 60+60+30 (theory1 + theory2 + practical) combination. This is also reason for many students getting failed result," he said.Tadas added that exam section staff are revising the results and handing over corrected ones to the private agency for uploading. "It has come to our notice that in many cases, the agency is uploading old results, leaving all the corrections undone," he said. The mistakes raised questions on functioning of the result scrutiny committee and the result committee, comprising experienced and senior professors and officers of NU and affiliated colleges. The scrutiny entails compliance to marking scheme of the course, followed by approval by the result commitee. Yet, results with a high rate of errors skipped the attention of both the committees and got published.infoMarksheets for Winter 2025 results had major calculation and tally errors Mistakes spotted in first-, third- and fifth-semester marksheets of both regular and backlog studentsIn many cases, maximum marks column showed ‘150' even as theory and practical marks totalled only 120Glaring mistakes in marks awarded columns.
