In a first, NMC installs mistsystem at traffic junctions
Nagpur: In a first-of-its-kind initiative to provide relief from Nagpur's harsh summer, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started installing ‘mist system' at major city intersections. The project, being implemented through CSR funding, aims to help motorists and commuters cope with soaring temperatures while waiting at traffic signals.Under the initiative, sprinklers combined with green shade nets are being installed at 10 prominent traffic squares across the city. The system sprays a fine mist of water, creating a cooling effect and reducing the felt temperature by nearly 5 degrees, according to civic officials. The first installations were already completed at Telephone Exchange Square and Chhapru Nagar Square. Work will soon begin at Shankar Nagar Square, Samvidhan Square and GPO Square, while other locations are also being identified.Officials said the ‘mist system' was designed to provide immediate respite to two-wheeler riders, pedestrians and commuters exposed to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.
Green nets installed above the road divider area help reduce the intensity of sunlight, while water mist sprayed through high-pressure nozzles creates a cooling atmosphere around the signal area.Under the system, around 40 high-pressure nozzles are fixed on poles attached to the green nets at a height of nearly 15 feet. The nozzles are connected to a 300-litre water tank, which is refilled three times a day to ensure uninterrupted operation throughout daytime hours.
